Epee

The epee is heavier than the foil, and has a larger bell to protect the hand (which, like the rest of the body, is valid target area in epee).   The epee was originally used as a practice weapon for the court sword, which was used in duels to first blood.   Since these duels did not result in death, right of way does not apply.   The first fencer to land a touch wins the point.

The shaded region (in this case, the entire body) is valid target area.
